Summer Reading
(week 28 readings for Reading the Bible in One Year).
Mostly, when I pick up a book to read, I don’t skip around in the middle parts and read randomly. Usually, I would look at maybe the first two paragraphs, and I might read a few reviews before deciding whether or not to spend my time on it.
Eugene Peterson’s Read-the-Bible-in-One-Year, large print edition has gone through all the Psalms and began them again last week. I have another version from Eugene Peterson which provides one day a week off, as a catch up week, and that version doesn’t seem to do the repeat of Psalms. One parishioner here, on the Peninsula is reading from another version of reading the Bible in one year - hers is chronologically organized. Lots of options.
In hindsight, I may have preferred not to recycle the Psalms and have one day off a week - maybe I wouldn’t be doing quite so much catch up*!
Anyway we look at it, there is summer reading to be had :) I hope you will join us for a week or two, sample a bit, where you have the space if you cannot commit to reading the entire Bible.
This week we begin reading Paul’s letter to the Romans. I appreciate Eugene Peterson’s take on Paul’s letters because I find it helps me to understand some of the sometimes “dense theology”. Beginning with Romans means we are beginning with the most mature of Paul’s letters included in the Bible, as this letter is believed to be the latest written of his many letters which comprise a good chunk of the New Testament. By this time, Paul has had the time to mature as a follower of Jesus, and his discourses on grace are quite a departure from his earlier letters which are much more instructional for communities in which he has planted the Gospel seeds.
This week, the Bible went to the beach with me! And it was lovely.

Word-giving God, bring my mind to a receptive state as I sit by the water, or appreciating your creation - where-ever I am, that your Word may land on the parts of my soul that need such nourishment. Give me a receptive mind, a receptive heart, a receptive soul. Amen.

Sunday July 12th (We begin Paul’s letter to the Romans): 1 Chronicles 12:19 to 1 Chronicles 14:17, Romans 1:1-17, Psalm 9:13-20 and Proverbs 19:4-5.
Monday July 13th: 1 Chronicles 13:1 to 1 Chronicles 16:36, Romans 1:18-32, Psalm 10:1-13 and Proverbs 19:6-7.
Tuesday July 14th: 1 Chronicles 16:37 to 1 Chronicles 18:17, Romans 2:1-24, Psalm 10:14-18 and Proverbs 19:8-9.
Wednesday July 15th: 1 Chronicles 19:1 to 1 Chronicles 22:1, Romans 2:25 to Romans 3:8, Psalm 11:1-7 and Proverbs 19:10-12.

Interesting, I read my first Peterson book just now: Working the Angles. He mentioned the importance of Psalms to prayer. Thanks for this JB!
